Miami, FL  (November 2012)  — It is with great pleasure we announce earlier this month the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) held its 86th presidential inauguration where our very own Dr. Dana V. Wallace, M.D. was installed as the 2013 president. A commendable feat in and of itself, but knowing she is only the third female president appointed in 86 years makes this honor all that more impressive. The inaugural ceremony and dinner took place on November 3, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Ft. Lauderdale, and was attended by 250 notable members of the medical community. This title brings prestige, not only on a personal level for Dr. Wallace, but to our practice as well. Congratulations!

Dr. Wallace is an active physician at Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care, board-certified in pediatrics/allergy, asthma & immunology, with ample experience as a first-hand practitioner and as member of numerous medical committees and organizations. Dr. Wallace is an associate clinical professor at Nova Southern University in Davie, FL. She is also immediate-past president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), and currently serves on the World Allergy Organization Board of Directors (2012-2016). MIAMI, FL – July 17, 2012 – With summer travel in full swing, now is the peak season for bedbugs, which are prevalent between July and September.  Bedbug bites can lead to allergies often mistaken as a simple rash or urticaria. They can also set-off asthma attacks and although rare, have even led to reports of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that causes the swelling or tightness of the throat.

Bedbug bites appear as red bumps on areas of the skin that is usually not covered while sleeping. Contrary to other rashes which are also itchy, the bedbug bites often follow a line pattern, which will usually be redder in the morning. MIAMI, FL – June 27, 2012 – Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care (FCAAC) celebrates National Mango Month at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s 20^th Anniversary Mango Festival on July 14^th and 15^th, 2012, offering the South Florida community information and advice on recognizing and treating mango allergies for a safe and happy summer.

Mangos are a South Florida diet staple. Nourishing and delicious, mangos are an excellent source of antioxidants, beta-carotene and vitamin C. Unfortunately for some, mango trees produce an oil called urushiol, present in all parts of the plant, including the roots, leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit, which can induce allergic contact dermatitis when touched or consumed. Mango allergy symptoms can typically take hours to present. Signs of contact dermatitis include blisters around the mouth, itching, redness and hives. MIAMI, FL – April, 2012 – Food allergy is a life-threatening condition that affects 6 to 8% of children under four years of age in the United States and roughly 4% of adults, and its prevalence appears to be increasing. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of children with food allergies has increased 18% in the past ten years and the number of patients seeking treatment at hospitals and clinics for food allergy related symptoms has tripled since 1993. Other types of allergies, such as hay fever or seasonal allergies can be controlled through medications and treated with immunotherapy. Food allergies, however, can only be managed by avoiding the foods that cause reactions and treating the reactions caused by exposure. In the case of a severe, life-threatening system shutdown, or anaphylactic shock, treatment with epinephrine (EpiPen) is the difference between life and death. With 150 to 200 people dying from severe food allergy-related reactions in the United States, Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care wants to help you be prepared for an emergency.
