Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care has Prepared a Hurricane Ready Checklist for Patients with Allergies and Asthma
MIAMI, FL – June 2013 – June marks the beginning of Hurricane Season. As you prepare for this season’s stormy weather by stocking up on batteries, water and canned foods, it’s also important to have an Allergy & Asthma Care plan in place.
Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care (FCAAC) has put together a checklist for Allergy & Asthma patients.
Prepare in Advance:
- Put together a list of all your medical diagnosis including your food and medication allergies.
- Make a copy of your Asthma Action Plan.
- If it has been prescribed to you, make sure you have your Peak Flow Meter.
- Create a list of your current and rescue medications including instructions on when and how to use.
- Have a copy of your insurance cards and healthcare provider contact information available.
- Write down the address and phone numbers of your closest hospital, your primary care physician, and your allergist – Remember to ask for the best phone number in the event of a power outage as landline phones may not work.
Once a Hurricane Warning is Issued:
- Make sure you have a supply of your current daily medications and rescue medications to last for two weeks.
- Purchase a 2-Pack of your prescribed epinephrine auto-injector.
- Buy a spacer for your inhaled medications if this has been prescribed.
- Buy a nebulizer for your asthma meds if this has been prescribed.
- Obtain allergy injections if you are due within the next two weeks. Remember it is ok to get one allergy injection early.
If you are heading to a Shelter:
- If you are allergic to pets, make sure to pick a Shelter in your county that does not allow animals.
- Food Allergy patients should bring their own food to last at least two days.
- Bring your own Nebulizers, medications, but note that most shelters have nebulizers available if required.
