Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care says South Floridians who suffer from asthma & allergies could experience difficulty breathing
MIAMI, FL – AUGUST 9TH 2013 – Meteorologists are predicting African dust will make its way over South Florida this weekend. African dust acts as an allergen, which will affect people who suffer from allergies and respiratory issues. Because it is a cloud of dust particles from the Sahara desert it might cause breathing issues such as cough, wheeze, chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
The National Weather Service in Miami warned of the dust outbreak and says to expect an unusually high concentration of dust. According to NASA, some Saharan dust has been known to make the journey across the Atlantic and to the U.S. east coast. But Saharan dust doesn’t just cause sunrises to appear more reddish; the dust also impacts the development of clouds and precipitation. The dust particles can provide a surface for small cloud droplets and ice crystals to form within clouds. More dust particles means that a given amount of available water is spread onto more particles, creating large numbers of small drops and delaying the formation of larger raindrops. When the dust arrives, it settles into its own layer of Saharan air and stabilizes the atmosphere, reducing the amount of clouds and trapping the surface-based air into the atmosphere’s lower levels. That can cause irritation to people who are especially sensitive to particles in the air.
