MIAMI, FL – January 6,  2014 –The New Year always brings new resolutions and maintaining good health is always at the top of the list. For those who suffer from asthma and/or allergy, it’s even more important to think about how to improve your general health. With day-to-day focus on managing a complex health condition we tend to forget the more simple steps we can take to achieve the best body and mind health.

Food matters. Eat a colorful, seasonal, organic diet that fits in with your dietary requirements. This ensures you eat good nutritious food packed with vitamins, minerals and fatty acids minus the immune-confusing, hormone-altering pesticides and other agrochemicals in non-organic food.

While you may not be able to eliminate allergy and asthma symptoms with food, experts believe that higher intakes of omega-3s and vitamin C from food especially fresh fruit and supplements can help.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition, some studies show that if your diet contains foods rich in natural anti-inflammatory like omega-3’s or fish oil supplementation may help to reduce inflammation and open your airways. Foods high in vitamin C include peppers (green and red), kale, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, guavas, orange or grapefruit juice, kiwis, peaches, oranges, strawberries and pineapples.

“A healthy and varied diet always help to improve your overall health”, said Dr. Adriana Bonansea-Frances.

Control your environment. This New Year, take the time to allergy-proof your home. Consider replacing your carpet with tile, laminate or wood floors. Carpet is infamous for dead dust mites, pollen and dust, and living without it means less daily exposure to allergens. In addition, run your air conditioner outfitted with an allergen reducing HEPA filter to help you breathe better at home. Also, avoid chemicals in your home such as plant or flea sprays, air fresheners and artificial aromatherapy candles that can trigger allergy symptoms.

Reducing allergens in the bedroom is especially important, since so much time is spent there. Our sweat at night creates an ideal environment for dust mites in addition to the skin we shed. Vacuuming often and keeping sheets clean is essential.
