Are your allergies stopping you from enjoying Easter?
10 tips for making this Easter allergy free

MIAMI, FL – April 2,  2015 – For most, Easter is a family-centered, laughter-filled holiday with fun outdoor festivities and sugary treats to enjoy. However, the holiday can be a source of stress for parents with children who are sensitive to a variety of food and environmental allergens. Florida Center for Allergy & Asthma Care has 10 tips to keep families safe and allergy-free this Easter.

10 Tips for an Allergy Free Easter

  1. There are many alternatives for filling your child’s basket by using toys, stickers, books and other fun, non-food items.
  2. Instead of decorating regular eggs, try to paint, decoupage or bead wooden ones.
  3. Another option is to make Jello Easter eggs, decorate marshmallows or even bake cookies using Easter molds.
  4. If hosting a gathering, make sure all food items are free of possible allergy causing ingredients, such as: peanuts, milk, eggs and wheat. Many can also be allergic to chocolate, a popular Easter basket treat.
  5. Be careful at the buffet table. Cross-contamination can become a problem due to the use of serving spoons. You can choose to serve your child first or prepare a separate plate in the kitchen.
  6. Spring is here, so if you are going outside to take part in the fun of an Easter egg hunt, be sure to check on the pollen count first.
  7. If you choose to attend an outdoor event, change the clothes of babies and toddlers often. The whole family should change when they return home.
  8. Avoid egg hunts in grassy areas. Check your community calendar to find events happening at a neighborhood museum, indoor playground or host one inside your home!
  9. Many children are allergic to the saliva and dander from pets, including bunnies. Stay away from animals that are known to cause allergies and always wash your hands when handling them.
  10. Allergy sufferers should always carry an EpiPen or epinephrine autoinjector.

A resulting allergy attack can range from skin reactions, sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, coughing to even asthma or anaphylaxis in severe cases. Reactions vary depending on the type of exposure to the allergen and whether it is consumed or the exposure is through skin.
