XOLAIR is the first FDA-approved medication for food allergies

XOLAIR is a medication that has long been prescribed for the treatment of asthma.

The good news is that it’s now been approved for food allergies, proven to significantly reduce allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, after accidental exposure to one or more foods.

We know you have questions!

How does XOLAIR work?

→ It’s an injectable prescription medicine to treat food allergy in people 1 year of age and older. It reduces the reactions occurring after eating or becoming exposed to one or more foods one is allergic to. It’s not to be used as emergency treatment to any reaction including anaphylaxis.

Does it treat ALL food allergies?

→ The FDA approval is based on one trial study conducted with children with peanut allergy and at least two other food allergens, including the most common tree nuts, egg, milk, and wheat.

Why is it important to see an allergist?

→ In order to determine if you qualify, the allergist will require a blood test. An allergist is a doctor specialized in the testing, diagnosis, and treatment of allergies, asthma, and immune system diseases and is the specialist that performs allergy testing like skin prick or blood tests before diagnosing an allergy. If a food allergy is confirmed, the allergist prepares a personalized treatment and educates the patient on how to manage the diagnosis.

Does it mean I can eat freely without restrictions?

→ No, XOLAIR is to be used while maintaining strict food allergen avoidance. “While it will not eliminate food allergies or allow patients to consume food allergens freely, its repeated use will help reduce the health impact if accidental exposure occurs.” (1)
Limitations of Use: XOLAIR is intended for repeated use to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and is not indicated for the emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Is it an over the counter?

→ It needs to be prescribed by an allergist.

Is it covered by my insurance?

→ Coverage, benefits and copayments specifics vary by insurance plan.

How do I know it’s the right fit for me or my child?

→ A Board Certified allergist is the right physician to test, diagnose, and prescribe this medication

Is it a one-time treatment?

→ It’s a monthly pre-filled injection administered under the skin (sub-cutaneous) by a nurse or doctor.

As always, request an appointment with one of our physicians to discuss further.
