We made FCAAC Buddy Heroes for children with allergies and asthma
For this year’s back to school campaign, at FCAAC we want to explore the Buddy System for children with allergies and asthma: the safety strategy where a student is paired with a trusted classmate or friend who can help in the event of an emergency.
Let us introduce you to our FCAAC Heroes: Mary the Allergy Buddy and Eugene the Asthma Buddy.

Why have a Buddy?
Awareness:
The buddy knows about the child’s condition, symptoms to watch for, and what to do in case of a reaction or asthma episode.
Support:
The buddy stays close during times of higher risk (e.g., lunchtime for food allergies, gym class for asthma, recess for both).
Help in case of Emergency:
The buddy can:
- Alert an adult immediately.
- Help the child get to the school nurse.
- Retrieve the child’s inhaler or epinephrine auto-injector or nasal spray (if trained and allowed).
- Stay calm and reassure the child while help arrives.
Prevention:
For food allergies, the buddy can help avoid food sharing or touching contaminated surfaces.
For asthma, they can remind their friend to pre-medicate before exercise or avoid known triggers.
Buddy Responsibilities (Age-Appropriate Tasks)
- Stay nearby during: Lunch/snack time, PE/recess, transitions to/from class, bathroom, playground, bus, etc., field trips or special events.

Asthma: Coughing/wheezing; Shortness of breath; Chest tightness; Trouble talking or walking.
